How to make a drum kit from a song

In S9 Sampler, open Create Drum Kit, choose Extract from a song and let it separate the drums and cut them into hits. Pick the hits you want, add your own drum files, chops or branches, and play the finished kit across your keyboard, with its own pitch, envelope and effects on every sound.

Build the kit, step by step

  1. Open Create Drum Kit

Choose Create Drum Kit in the sound browser. You get two starting points: Use drum files, or Extract from a song.

  2. Choose a song

Choose Extract from a song and pick or drop a song. Choose Fast, Balanced (the default) or Best Quality, then choose Extract Drums.

  3. Pick the hits

Audition the extracted hits and select the ones you want. Use Join Hits or remove a divider to fix an extra cut, and Undo if you change your mind.

  4. Add them to a kit

Choose Add to Drum Kit(s) to save the selected hits into one or several kits in your Library, or into a new kit.

  5. Add your own sounds

Use Add Files or Add Folder for your own drum samples. From the main editor, add chops and branches with the same Add to Drum Kit(s) picker, with or without their effects.

  6. Play and shape the kit

Open the kit and play it across the keyboard. Every sound has its own pitch, envelope and effects. Save it to your Library and keep adding sounds as you work.

How big can a kit be?

A kit can hold up to 4,096 sounds across 32 MIDI banks. Large kits stream from disk, so a kit is not refused just because its audio is large. New kits start with Voices set to Mono; you can change it.
